Understanding the IPL Auction

The IPL auction is always one of the most anticipated events in the Indian cricket calendar. The ever-rising excitement around the game’s toughest T20 league usually reaches its peak in the build-up to the bidding war. The IPL auction is where most teams can bolster their fortunes before participating in the on-field action.

The auction is a democratic process wherein teams with an equal purse across the board bid for their desired picks, and one making the highest bid is able to purchase that player.

This detailed, rigorous process allows money-handling and strategizing to come to the fore as skills to compile the right kind of squad. Err, in this process, a franchise leaves itself vulnerable to missing out on the right plugs for the right holes and ultimately losing out on the field.

Below is a detailed list of terms that often catches viewers’ eyes during an IPL auction. These are used to ascertain the purse available for teams to buy their auction picks after retaining and releasing some members of their squad, the number of overseas slots they still have to fulfil, the base price, and the reserve prizes.

Purse Remaining or Reserve Prize The amount each franchise has for the auction after deduction of money spent on their retention and released players.
Overseas Slots These are minimum slots a franchise must fill at the IPL auction.

Today’s IPL Auction Results: Live Updates

The first player up for grabs is Kane Williamson. As part of set 1, he goes to Gujarat Titans (GT) at a base sum of INR 2 crores. The former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain is now a Titans batter. It would be interesting to see where the franchise fits New Zealand great in their settled playing XI.

England’s rising young batter Harry Brook, considered one of the finest talents in world cricket, goes to SRH for INR 13.25 crores, becoming the first millionaire of the IPL 2023 auction. As it panned out, Brook had his first bid made by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) before the Rajasthan Royals (RR) joined in the bidding war. But ultimately, it was SRH who broke their bank for him that reserved the player’s services.

Mayank Agarwal’s name entered the bidding tussle for INR 1 crores. RCB once again make the first move. PBKS join in. They are followed by CSK at 3 crores. Persistent PBKS enter a direct war with CSK, and the prize zooms up to INR 5 crores. Now, SRH swoop in and fight for the player with the two franchises. Agarwal’s prize shoots up to 7.75 crores. CSK make a bid of 8 crores, but they shut the shop as SRH takes the sum to 8.25 crores, which is now the final bidding prize. Former PBKS captain Mayank Agarwal is now an SRH opener.

CSK do find their Indian opener in Ajinkya Rahane, as he pops up for a base sum of INR 50 lakhs. The uncontested player goes to the four-time champions at his base prize.

All eyes were on Set 2 featuring the bid-name overseas all-rounders, and it is England’s Sam Curran, who is the first name up for bidding. Curran has entered with a base sum of 2 crores. MI and RCB swoop in immediately. It’s going frenetic now, with the paddle raised every second. The prize zooms up to 6 crores. Royals jump in to see the prize further shoot up to 10 crores. CSK enter with the sum now skyrocketing to 11.75 crores.

MI and RCB have left, and so have the Royals, but CSK have a battle on their hands with PBKS. The prize goes up to 15 crores. CSK take the lead with a bid of 15.25 crores. But PBKS shut them up with a bid of 15.75 crores. LSG are the surprise entrants with 16 crores. PBKS, however, are hell-bent on regaining their all-rounder and win the tussle at 18 crores. Sam Curran is now the most expensive player ever in the history of the IPL.

Defending champions Titans make a quiet but secured punt at WI all-rounder Odean Smith, fetching him for a base sum of INR 50 lakhs.

PBKS bolster their all-round stocks and playing combination with the inclusion of Zimbabwe’s in-form all-round cricketer Sikandar Raza for another base sum bid of 50 lakhs.

Jason Holder is the next player in. The Caribbean all-rounder has set his base prize at 2 crores, recognising the paucity of all-round options available to teams. Holder finds his first bid from CSK. The Royals now jump in. They’re both at it passionately. The prize swells up to 5 crores. Successive bids take the prize to 5.50 crores. But Holder ultimately goes to the Royals for a sum of 5.75 crores.

Cameron Green enters the scene with huge expectations. The young Australian all-rounder has a base sum of INR 2 crores. Oh, immediately, the Mumbai Indians raise their paddle. They are followed by the Delhi Capitals. Now it’s reaching a frenzy. There is a paddle raised every second. Within a minute of his name popping up, Green has become a millionaire before even playing his first match of the IPL. The bid has reached 17 crores. Surely, surely, it’s over now. But hang on; MI persist with a bid of 17.25 crores. That is the winning bid, too. Green is still the second-highest-bid player ever, though, with Curran taking the cake only a few bids earlier.

Green is followed by Ben Stokes, the world’s leading all-rounder and England Test captain, pushing for a return to the IPL after three years. Stokes has a base prize set at 2 crores. Royals are the first to jump in. Their bid follows that of RCB. What do we have here? It’s a real battle now. The prize has zoomed up to 6 crores. But RR have the lead at 6.25 crores.

We have a new bidder in LSG here. The prize stands at 7 crores now. SRH also get into it. Another riveting auction war on hands as Stokes only gets richer, with the prize skyrocketing up to 14 crores. His return to the IPL has been worth it for the England cricketer. CSK enter at 15.25 crores. LSG make one final push before they walk off. CSK, the late entrants for Stokes, have bagged their player at 16.25 crores – another bank broker.

Today’s IPL Auction: Top Picks and Surprises

Todays IPL Auction Top Picks and Surprises

Live updates ipl auction provided a nice glimpse into the top picks for the auction today, with no surprise that the auction’s set 2 produced the biggest bids. And for a good reason. It featured the game’s finest all-round cricketers of the current generation, and with the paucity of Indian names capable of providing similar utility, it was only expected that the franchises would break the bank to reserve their services.

ipl 2023

The biggest pick from the ipl auction live today was England all-rounder Sam Curran, whom PBKS fetched at a jaw-dropping sum of INR 18 crores. The English cricketer benefited immensely from his “Player of the Tournament” performance at the men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and is now the highest-bid player ever in the history of the IPL.

Cameron Green had the chance to match or potentially go beyond even Curran, though, when Mumbai Indians (MI) started shelling out the maximum portion of their purse for his services. Wanting to avail the Aussie cricketer after the retirement of their premier all-rounder Kieron Pollard, MI were always expected to go after him. What followed, however, was a riveting battle with the Capitals, who, combined with LSG and SRH, pushed the base prize of 2 crores to 17 crores, with MI ultimately bagging their player for 17.5 crores.

Two other notable top picks were England all-rounder Ben Stokes and West Indies middle-order maverick Nicholas Pooran. Stokes, making a return to the IPL after three years, found a winning bid of INR 16.25 crores from CSK, reuniting with the legendary MS Dhoni at the four-time champions after his two-season stint with the now-disbanded Rising Pune Super Giants. Stokes had entered at a base sum of 2 crores. But then a flurry of bids from RCB, Royals, SRH and LSG pushed the prize up to 15 crores. Notably, the CSK were late entrants into things and emerged victorious despite other franchises pushing the base sum up by 8 times.

Pooran was not only LSG’s most expensive pick but also a bit of a surprise pick himself. After struggling in the previous year’s IPL, where he turned out for SRH, Pooran found a new base for himself at an even greater sum. It was perhaps the biggest ipl auction news of the day. Not many franchises were expected to shell out the money for him. But Pooran attracted multiple bidders and became one of the millionaires to emerge in the ipl auction live update. The Caribbean maverick will now be eyeing a fruitful season to justify the faith shown in him by the LSG think-tank.

The live updates ipl auction list includes various other picks that can be categorised into top picks and surprises. But below is a bit of a rundown on the picks above, with their strengths and weaknesses notified alongside their base sums and also the bidding prize they ultimately went for.

“They are quality bowlers (Curran, Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh). Two are left-armers and a right-armer who hits that full length hard, which is Rabada. So that makes a big difference, and I believe that this bowling unit among all the IPL teams, if you check based on availability, their names are right up there” – Irfan Pathan.“Mitchell Marsh to win Orange Cap”
Reaction: “Such a big player and now he has to come to form. His brother had won the Orange Cap once, but Punjab couldn’t win the tournament then. But if he (Mitchell) wins the Orange Cap, their team will win the tournament, such is the impact of this player” – Ajay Jadeja
Insights Given his form, Marsh is indeed very much capable of finishing with the ‘Orange Cap’. The Australian seems to have taken his powerhitting game to another level with time, managing to hit even good length balls out of the park.
The comment on Curran being a valuable addition to the PBKS pace attack is also true. The left-arm pacer brings to PBKS an extra option with the new-ball, plus his angle and ability to move the ball both ways makes him that much tougher to counter for the opposition batters.
